Commemoration of the dead May 4th

May 1, 2018 - On the 4th of May the Netherlands commemorates all Dutch victims since the Second World War. These are soldiers and civilians who died in war situations and in peace operations. The Dutch flag is at half-mast and at 20.00 it is silent for 2 minutes.

Commemorations at a local war memorial are held in all municipalities in the Netherlands. The national commemoration in the Netherlands takes place in the following way:

Between 20:00 and 20:02 hours everyone is silent for 2 minutes.

The Dutch flag (without pennant) hangs half-mast from 18:00 to sunset. Often there are activities after 8:02 pm, such as wreaths and flowers.

Public places should take into account the commemoration of the dead.

That means preferably not giving parties and the like. Preferably no music and activities between 19.45 and 20.15 hours. For visitors it should be possible to keep 2 minutes of silence between 20:00 and 20:02 hours.
